Campus Living Centres’ Corporate Team Volunteers with Daily Bread Food Bank
Part of the Campus Living Centres’ corporate identity is based on our staff engagement, which includes giving back to the many communities we serve through our student residence buildings. On Thursday, January 8th, 2015, Associate Director of Residence Life, Greg Hum, organized a volunteering event at the Daily Bread Food Bank for the Campus Living Centre corporate team.
Leading up to the volunteering event, the corporate team collected 252 pounds of food through an office drive. Campus Living Centres also made a financial contribution to the Daily Bread Food Bank. On the day of the event, the team packaged and boxed 780 beef patties, and sorted food donations. Through our collective efforts, we packaged enough food to serve 1988 individuals.

Northern College Residence On Schedule for 2015 Opening
Construction of the new student residence at Northern College’s Haileybury Campus is on target to be completed in August 2015. The new residence being developed is a partnership between Northern College and Campus Living Centres, and will feature 16 apartment-style units, each with four private bedrooms. Each unit will also include a kitchen with an eat-in dining area, a living room, and two bathrooms.
The new residence will help address the increasing number of students coming from Southern Ontario, and Northern College President, Fred Gibbons, says, “It can be challenging for our students to find rental accommodations, and we’re pleased that our work with Campus Living Centres will make it easier for our students to find affordable housing that’s close to campus.” After the project is completed, Campus Living Centres will manage the new residence.

Confederation College Partners with Campus Living Centres to Develop New Student Village
In an effort to address the critical accommodations shortage in Thunder Bay, Confederation College announced a partnership with Campus Living Centres to develop four new student residence buildings. The new residence project will add 256 total beds to campus, with the first two buildings scheduled to open for the 2015 Fall semester. Each building will house 64 students in fully furnished apartment-style accommodations, with four private bedrooms per unit.
Once the project is complete, Campus Living Centres will manage the new residence. Campus Living Centres already manages the existing residence, Sibley Hall, at Confederation College.

Algonquin College Takes a Zero Waste Approach to Replacing Old Mattresses in Residence
This past summer, during a meeting in which Algonquin College Student Residence was planning to replace more than 1000 beds, Residence Services Manager, Nicola From, asked a question that would initiate an innovative zero waste project on campus: “Isn't there an alternative to just dumping 1050 bed sets (or approximately 3000 separate pieces) into a dump site?”
Through the leadership of Bryan Boudreau, Algonquin College Facilities Supervisor, and Sherry Stevenson, Area Manager of Public Affairs at Waste Management, 1050 mattresses and 1050 box springs (and associated metal frames) were repurposed to achieve zero waste status. All remaining parts that were unsuitable for reuse were recycled, diverting them from a landfill.
Boudreau believes, “Diversion is very important to Algonquin College”, and the Campus Living Centres’ team at Algonquin College Student Residence was very excited to help support the College’s sustainability efforts through this project.

2014 Residence Life Staff Training Conference at Algonquin College
Every August, two weeks before residence move-in weekend, Campus Living Centres hosts a Residence Life Staff Training Conference to provide training, development, and workshops for the Residence Life teams. Over the past five years, as we continue to increase the number of our professional Residence Life staff, it has been reflected in our conference attendance which has increased by over 200%. This year, Algonquin College (Ottawa, Ontario) hosted the 2014 Residence Life Staff Training Conference with 240 Campus Living Centres staff.
The week-long conference focused on seminars and presentations that educate the Residence Life Team on handling situations involving bullying, alcohol consumption, drug awareness, conflict mediation, and sexual assault protocol. There are also professional development sessions around social media and professionalism, student development theory, and self care & balance.
Each evening, social events were held to encourage communication and team building. Ted X speakers Nicole Belanger and Blake Fly were invited to speak and provided valuable lessons with their inspirational words. The conference ended with a banquet to celebrate the achievements throughout the week. The banquet was held at the Ottawa Convention Centre and included dinner, awards, and evening entertainment.

Students in Campus Living Centres’ Residences Raise $45,000 for Relay for Life
Over the last few years, Campus Living Centres has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life program. Relay for Life is a fun, inspirational 12-hour fundraising event that brings together everyone from the community to celebrate life and to raise funds to help the fight against cancer. This non-competitive event includes a variety of activities including craft projects, live bands and performers, and carnival games. Individuals are placed in teams that raise money to assist the Canadian Cancer Society. During the event, teams come together with cancer survivors at local community areas, and take turns walking laps over the course of 12-hours.
This past year, students in the residences at Niagara College – Welland campus, Niagara College – Niagara-on-the-Lake campus, Durham College, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Centennial College, Seneca College - Newnham campus, and Seneca College - King campus organized and participated in four different Relay for Life events. Between the students and residence staffs from each participating campus residence, over 250 individuals worked together to raise approximately $45,000.
Two committees were recognized for their efforts and dedication towards this powerful event. The Relay committee at Seneca College residence was awarded the Innovation Award by the Canadian Cancer Society and the Relay committee at Centennial College Residence was awarded the Centennial College President`s Spirit Award.

Campus Living Centres Strengthens Partnership with Georgian College with the addition of the Barrie campus student residence
Campus Living Centres is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Georgian College Barrie Campus Student Residence Management Services contract. With residence management agreements already in place at the Georgian College Owen Sound and Orillia campuses, Campus Living Centres is delighted to welcome the Barrie campus student residence to our growing portfolio.
Dr. Catherine Drea, Georgian College Vice President Student Engagement and University Partnerships, says the decision to explore a third-party operation of the Barrie campus residence was based on a review of the College’s core business strategies. Dr. Drea continued, “Campus Living Centres was selected as the successful proponent because of Campus Living Centres’ ability to contribute to a positive student experience on campus”.
The residence facility, located in Barrie, Ontario, is 12 years old and houses up to 525 students annually. The eight-storey building consists primarily of two bedroom suites with a bathroom and kitchenette, and also offers one and three bedroom suites. Campus Living Centres is excited to be a part of the strong Residence Life program at the Barrie residence, allowing us to continue our mission of being a leader in Canadian student housing.
The management of the Georgian College Barrie campus student residence will transition to Campus Living Centres on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.
Canadore College Residence Service Learning Trip to Moose Factory, Ontario
Trying out beaver and moose meat, snow shoeing in -45C weather, and listening to the First Nations’ Elders speak of their culture, are a just a few things ten students and one leader from Canadore College participated in on a service trip to Moose Factory, Ontario. Beginning in September, Jessica Charbonneau, Residence Life Coordinator at Canadore College decided to take her passion for service learning to a new level by creating a unique opportunity service learning experience for Canadore College Residence students. The experience began as early as the fall, when students would get together to discuss topics such as global citizenship, service learning, and leadership.
The journey to Moose Factory began with an early morning bus ride to Cochrane, and then a train ride on the Polar Express to Moose Factory. Throughout the week the students spent time planning discussions and workshops with local students about bullying, suicide, peer pressure, drugs/alcohol, and the role social media has on all these topics. The team traveled to several schools where they played different games with the kids and spoke to them about these issues.
Understanding and learning about the Cree culture (and the culture within Canada’s First Nations people) was also very prominent throughout the trip. The students had several opportunities to speak to Elders, and engage in community activities including beading, preparing moose, dumplings, and bannock. The trip was an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the community of Moose Factory and learn more about the local culture.
The Moose Factory Service Trip is one of four trips coordinated by Campus Living Centres in partnership with our post-secondary institutional partners. Other service learning destinations will include trips to the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

International Students Celebrate the Winter Holidays at Canadore College Residence
For many international students studying in Canada, going home during the winter break isn’t always possible. Canadore College students who remained in residence over the break were treated to a variety of events, introducing them to Canadian holiday traditions and culture. Organized by Canadore College Residence, events included a downtown winter walk, preparing cookies for Santa, a Christmas Day parade, dinner with Canadore College President George Burton, and a New Year’s Eve party.
This time of year can be hard for those away from their homes and families, but first year English as a Second Language student, Carolina Rodrigues Bretas, says, “These events will make my stay in Canada feel like a home away from home. I am really grateful for these opportunities.”

Campus Living Centres is proud to be named one of the recipients of the Seneca College 2013 Senecans of Distinction Awards. Recipients have included Seneca College alumni, who have excelled in their careers, and community partners, who have made significant social and economic contribution to the Seneca community.
Campus Living Centres shares a long history with Seneca College and currently manages the student residences on the King and Newnham campuses. Campus Living Centres is making an ongoing contribution to Seneca students’ education through the Campus Living Centres Academic Award and the Campus Living Centres Bursary.
