Campus Living Centres Inc. announces Clarence Chong as the new Senior Manager of Marketing & Sales

Campus Living Centres is pleased to announce Clarence Chong as the new Senior Manager, Marketing & Sales. The appointment of Clarence Chong is effective April 29, 2013.

Clarence comes to Campus Living Centres from the University of Manitoba, with a multifaceted background in marketing, recruitment, event management, alumni relations, residence life, and hospitality. Clarence began his career in post-secondary education as a Residence Life Coordinator at the University of Manitoba and most recently, held the position of Coordinator, Marketing and Community Relations in Student Residences. In that position, he was responsible for the marketing (academic year and summer/conference season) and student recruitment of residence, developing a corporate sponsorship strategy to support residence life programs, cultivating relationships with residence alumni, and Residence Orientation.

Clarence also collaborated with the University of Manitoba’s Marketing and Communications Office and Office of Student Recruitment to incorporate Student Residences into part of the institution’s overall branding and recruitment strategy. He has travelled with Recruitment Officers to support their recruitment efforts across Canada, the United States, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Clarence was a key member of the University of Manitoba’s Integrated Marketing and Communications working group, the Strategic Enrolment Management (SEM) Marketing committee, as well as the university’s Mobile App Committee. In 2008, Clarence attended the Canadian Institute on Student Affairs and Services (CISAS) receiving a certificate from CHERD. Through the years, he has attended a multitude of workshops and seminars on topics such as social media marketing, hospitality and customer service, communication, and leadership.

Prior to his work at the University of Manitoba, Clarence started his career in hospitality as the Campus Relations Manager at Canad Inns, the largest hotel franchise in Manitoba. The position focused on developing strong relationships with all post-secondary institutions in Manitoba with the goal of increasing market share and overall sales in the areas of food and beverage, hotel, conference, and banquet services. In this regard, Clarence was responsible for developing and managing university/college sales on behalf of all Canad Inns’ franchises operating in Manitoba.

Clarence holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba, where he majored in International Business. Clarence lived in residence during his undergraduate studies and held multiple student government positions in residence, including Vice-President Finance, Vice-President Services, and President. In his final year of school, Clarence also held the position of Assistant Director of Programming with the University of Manitoba Students’ Union. Clarence is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Integrated Studies at Athabasca University.


Two new Georgian College student campus residences should be up and ready for the fall

ORILLIA - Construction of Georgian College’s Orillia campus residences is ahead of schedule.

Following a delay this fall after an at-risk tree species was found on the northeast corner of the Memorial Avenue property, work on two of four 28,000-square-foot buildings is not only back on track, but moving along more quickly than anticipated, according to the college’s vice-president of administration, Brandon Lander.

“There’s little doubt we’ll be ready at this point for the fall. We’re doing very well. It’s going quicker than we expected,” said Lander.

One of the 16-unit buildings is taking shape and crews from Campus Living Centres (CLC) are working on the foundation of the second 64-bed residence, which will allow 128 students to choose on-campus housing for the 2013-14 school year. CLC will also manage the residences, and already owns and operates ones at the school’s Barrie and Owen Sound campuses.

Lander said construction of the third and fourth buildings is likely to start next year, but depends on demand.

“We have almost no doubt that they will be full and we expect there will be adequate demand to proceed!” Lander said, adding the college has seen positive responses at open houses so far.

With room for 128 students to move in this September, Orillia Housing Resource Centre coordinator Nadine Ritchie said the effect on the Orillia rental market could go one of two ways.

“It is going to free up some rental stock, but on the flipside, too, a lot of the landlords who are renting to students are very student-driven; that’s the type of clients that they want, that’s the type of tenants they want,” said Ritchie.

She said students struggling to find places or Lakehead students might end up in the unit.

Lander doesn’t think it will make a huge dent on the rental market.

He noted anecdotal evidence suggests prospective students have chosen to go elsewhere because there wasn’t on-campus housing in Orillia.

“We’re hopeful that it would pick up some of those students who wouldn’t have come anyway. That way, it may not have a very big effect on the rental market in Orillia,” said Lander.

“We can’t conceive of anything at this point that would cause us to not have them both ready for the fall,” he said.

Students Find their Home Away from Home at Canadore College

Canadore’s new apartment-style residence was filled to capacity when it opened its doors to students this fall.

Construction of the six story, 200 bed residence was completed at the end of August to prepare for new and returning students to move-in. Each of the new self-contained apartments consists of two spacious private bedrooms equipped with a double bed, high speed internet and a flat screen television with cable. All 100 units are air-conditioned with a shared living space and kitchen with granite countertops.

“Partnering with Campus Living Centres gave us a tremendous opportunity to build one of the most modern and progressive residence complexes in the province,” said George Burton, President of Canadore College. “Our students are living in a building that was designed with them in mind, so that they could live, learn and have fun in a dedicated and safe environment.”

Every year Canadore welcomes about 3,500 students to its campuses. Over 61 per cent of the College’s student population relocates to North Bay from outside of the region and the City has one of the lowest vacancy rates in Ontario.

“Our students live about two-thirds of their life outside of the classroom,” said Shawn Chorney, Vice-President of Enrolment Management, Student Services and Recruitment. “We work hard to provide a dynamic and engaging experience for them every step of the way. Canadore is committed to strong residence programming because it is proven to promote academic success and the overall well-being of our students.”

Residence life activities are developed to ease the student’s transition to college. After-class programs are incorporated to help students learn domestic independence, resume writing and interview techniques and community leadership and development through guest speakers.

The second residence complex was designed by Malhotra Architecture with architectural support services by Standford Consulting and Design Ltd. and construction was managed by RHC Design-Build. The College also has another apartment-style complex residence adjacent to the new building and townhouse-style complexes next to its College Drive Campus. Each first-year student is guaranteed a spot in residence.

While the conversations about public-private-partnerships (P3s) in student housing have been more prevalent recently, they have been around in Ontario for a long time – mostly because of us. We have been operating student residences on campus for our client institutions for 20 years.  We are currently managing student residences on 18 campuses in Ontario (25% of all college/university campuses in the province). Within these residences, there are a total of approximately 8000 students (approximately 10% of total residence population in Ontario).

Our corporate staff in residence life serve as important student advocates on each campus.  The residence life budget, and all residence finances, are tightly controlled by a multi-disciplinary committee on each campus. No profits are gained from students through our residence life program. Programs and services are self funded on each campus through residence fees, just like they are on the majority of campuses across the country. Understanding these kind of details are important, because as you will see, what we provide students, how we provide it, and the outcomes we achieve, are no different. In fact, we think many of our new programs and services exemplify best practices.

Spare the Lecture: Students Click to Learn about Safer Drinking

Campus Living Centres' "Check Your Drinking: Residence Life" provides college and university residence students with anonymous, non-judgmental feedback.

Prior to the start of this academic year, Campus Living Centres, the largest owner and operator of student housing in Canada, launched a specialized online tool to help residence students make better decisions about their drinking.

Those 24 and under have nearly three times the rate of heavy frequent drinking compared to those 25 and over. Heavy drinking results in serious health consequences and increased emergency department admissions. However, there is strong evidence that certain interventions can help students stay healthy. Experts recommend interventions that combine cognitive-behavioral skills, normative comparisons and motivational feedback. Check Your Drinking based on these principles of Brief Intervention.

"Students spend a lot of their time online so the screener is an excellent way to reach those who may not have sought out information otherwise," says Tim Fricker, Director, Residence Life and the Student Experience at Campus Living Centres. "The instant feedback tells students the facts they need to know to make informed choices about their drinking."

Check Your Drinking Residence Life is anonymous and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Students receive a personalized Final Report that helps them understand their drinking patterns, and how their drinking affects their health, finances and studies. Randomized Controlled Trials have repeatedly shown Check Your Drinking helps problem drinkers significantly reduce their alcohol consumption.

"Check Your Drinking is an excellent and technically relevant way to educate students about the reality of alcohol consumption without lecturing or nagging, which we all know doesn't work," says Trevor van Mierlo, CEO of Evolution Health, the company behind Check Your Drinking. "Students overestimate the amount that their peers are drinking, so our technology helps correct these misconceptions. Plus, it can be really eye opening for students to see how much money they on alcohol, how many calories they consume, and relatively easy tips on how to reduce their risk."

Evolution Health and Campus Living Centres are excited to partner on this project and produce new research on this topic. "The screener is a powerful platform to collect important data about residence student perceptions and habits related to alcohol across the country," says Mr. Fricker. "Very little of this type of data, if any, is available in Canada to describe the perceptions and habits of residence students from a cross section of institutions. This data will hopefully result in published research that may help residence administrators develop new educational programs and services for students that promote healthier choices."

New Canadore Residence Breaking Ground

Construction of Canadore College's new 200 bed residence is set to begin this week.

The ground at the College's lower field will be overturned to begin building the complex that will resemble the existing apartment residence.

Canadore is partnering with Campus Living Centres, Canada's largest owner and manager of student housing, to build the new six-floor, 100-unit, building to meet the expanding needs of the College's domestic and international students. Apartments will consist of two private bedrooms, as well as shared bathroom, kitchen and living space.

"It is exciting to be working with Campus Living Centres to be able to provide our students with quality facilities, dynamic services and an outstanding overall residence experience," said Shawn Chorney, Acting Vice President of Enrolment Management, Student Services and Recruitment. "The plans include a fabulous green space between buildings for recreational and social activities. CLC owns and manages over 12,000 student beds in the country, and will be incorporating best-in-class design elements that will enhance our student experience".

Approximately 20 per cent of full-time Canadore students live in residence. The addition of the new beds will increase overall residence capacity to 733 spots and provide more opportunity for out-of-town learners to access quality programs. The new residence complex is slated to open its doors for the Fall 2012 semester.

Canadore has over 65 full-time quality programs, outstanding faculty and student services, and boasts the highest graduation rate of all of Ontario's 24 public colleges.


Loyalist College Expands Student Housing Capacity Through Partnership with Campus Living Centres

Campus Living Centres is pleased to announce the opening of phase 1 of its 104 bed development at Loyalist College.

Prior to finalizing the deal with Campus Living Centres, the College provided residence space for 476 students. These additional beds will cater to upper year students, and will give students the opportunity to live on-campus until graduation. Campus Development Corp is the owner of these buildings that are constructed on College owned land.

The units are completely self contained 4-bedroom townhouses, located directly behind campus, and have been extremely well received by students. Although working against a very tight time line, 32 units were ready for occupancy September 1, 2010, with the balance of the units to be completed by July 1, 2011. With full occupancy, demand for these units has been extremely strong. Management of the complex is a joint effort between Campus Living Centres and Loyalist College, and the arrangement has achieved two primary objectives; provide superior living arrangements for upper year students who desire to remain on campus, and assist the College in student recruitment and retention efforts.

Cambrian College Announces Partnership with Campus Living Centres

Cambrian College President Sylvia Barnard announces details of a new initiative aimed at enhancing the student life experience for on-campus residents.

Starting in June 2010, Campus Living Centres of Canada – a residence management company specializing in developing dynamic, integrated living experiences for college and university students – will assume the management of Cambrian College’s residence properties.

Campus Living Centres has a lengthy track record of providing excellent customer service in the post secondary environment. They will be working with Cambrian staff and students to provide a variety of student-friendly services, including residence life programming, and will also be developing Cambrian’s summer residence and conference capacity.

“A supportive and enjoyable residence experience is a key component of student success and retention,” said Cambrian College President Sylvia Barnard. “Our students need and expect a living environment that is enriched by many student life activities when living on campus. By working with Campus Living Centres with their extensive experience and resources, Cambrian will be able to provide our students with a student life experience that meets and exceeds the expectations today’s students in a competitive market.”
