Located on a small and picturesque urban site in Ottawa, the Saint Paul University Student Housing building is situated in a well-treed area of the campus which provides enhanced outdoor amenity spaces. The design process included thoughtful and careful deliberation regarding the ideal setting for this project and was carefully situated to minimize loss of existing trees. The ground floor common areas of the building have been designed to be as transparent as possible to provide views through the building to the treed woodlot.
The needs of this project reflect a mature international student clientele with an emphasis on community living. Amenity spaces include common lounge/meeting rooms, community kitchens to be shared amongst all students, centralized laundry facility and a large multi-purpose room.
The building is configured in an inverted “L” shape and is seven storeys in height and provides a total of 187 beds.
The unit type for this project is a 2-bed suite configuration which features 2 private bed-sitting rooms, a common kitchen area and a shared washroom facility. The design emphasis for the unit was the incorporation of natural daylight into all living areas (bedrooms and common kitchen) of the unit.
