Research and Assessment

Data-driven decision making is essential to the development of a residence life program in order to truly enhance the student experience.

New research initiatives, the evaluation of existing programs and services, and the assessment of student and community characteristics are all equally important elements of our residence life program.

We are also focused on the continuous development of the following key tasks:

  • A regular schedule for program evaluation projects
  • Routine tracking, analysis and reporting of key data and metrics
  • Identification of prospective and current student needs
  • Development and assessment of student and staff learning outcomes
  • Annual student satisfaction surveys and focus groups
  • Publication of research findings via blogs, conferences and journals

Leading these projects are our Director and Assistant Director of Residence Life – Greg Hum and Dimple Savla – two professionals with significant graduate course and research work in student affairs. We also have strategic research and assessment partnerships with Campus Labs and Evolution Health Systems, who support these projects. We also use StarRez software to track key student data. Recent work has focused on the following metrics:

  • GPA scores (residence versus general population)
  • Student leader ratios
  • Residence student satisfaction scores (compared to Colleges Ontario KPI scores)
  • Retention and withdrawal rates
  • Alcohol use – student behaviours and perceptions
